Carnival of the Shisha: Romman Hookah Tobacco
A Review of Romman Hookah Tobacco
Romman was one of the first tobaccos to hit the “ultra premium hookah tobacco market.” They have been around for a long time, and have a long list of hookah tobacco flavors to prove it. But slamming down a $20-spot for 250 grams may be a little steep for what Romman has to offer.
If we had to say what Romman was known for, it would be their fruit flavors. They have many, everything from Apricot to Pineapple. Back in the day, when Romman was the only premium hookah tobacco with wide distribution, it was either a box of this stuff or Nakhla, and that made Romman the only good change up to the usual. But now-a-days, there are many other premium and ultra premium hookah tobacco brands out there that give you more bang for your buck.
As stated, you can’t go wrong with most of Romman’s fruit flavors. They all smoke well, if a little messy (this is another “juicy” hookah tobacco that can really gum up your bowl and stem). Our only gripe with their fruit flavors is that they all have a similar, honey sweet taste. If we were smoking Mango, it mine as well be Melon or Pineapple, because, while slightly different in flavor, the flavor is never too distinct to give you a reason to really switch them up. As for their signature flavor, we have to go with Cola. This is a real good cola flavor, maybe only challenged by the other ultra premium hookah tobacco, Starbuzz.
Romman smokes really well, and long, which are two of the best reasons to buy this tobacco. Most bowls will last longer than you want to smoke them (well over an hour given the right circumstances). In our opinion, though, the best way to enjoy Romman is to mix it. Because of its juicy nature, it makes a great compliment to Nakhla or Al Waha. It will make these other tobacco smoke longer, thicker, while taking on their more distinct flavors. It will also make your hookah dollar go a little longer, by cutting the ultra premium tobacco with some utility tobacco.
Over all, Romman is a bit steep for most hookah smokers. If you really want to smoke $4 of tobacco in one sitting, Starbuzz is probably your best bet (a review coming soon). But if you buy a jar of one of their generic fruit flavors and cut it with some cheaper hookah tobacco, you can’t go wrong with Romman.
